Dog With Cancer Rescued In Emotional Adoption At Hempstead Animal Shelter

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A dog with cancer that had been living at a shelter on Long Island has finally found a new home.

Duffy, an 8-year-old American bulldog, was adopted by Sharon Faucett at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter on Friday, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"He just needed to get out and I think he is going to thrive," Faucett said. "I really do."

Duffy had struggled to find a home due to his cancer diagnosis after being dropped off at the Hempstead Animal Shelter last October. The Town of Hempstead launched an emotional plea to help find the dog a loving home.

Faucett decided to adopt Duffy after a friend who volunteers at the shelter called her. But for Faucett, this adoption is more than just saving an animal in need.

"I don't have any children, I always wanted children," Faucett said. "...So it's like 'Happy Mother's Day' for me."

"I was like, 'I'm going to get my baby, I'm going to get my baby,'" Faucett said.

Faucett said it's a long road ahead for Duffy, but she is ready for a challenge. She said she will do everything she can to help Duffy.

"A shelter is not a happy life," Faucett said. "They do all they can, these volunteers....but it's a very sad life for them."

To celebrate Duffy leaving the shelter, the Town of Hempstead is waiving all adoption fees for the month of May as part of their #DuffySentMe campaign.
