MONTAUK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)– As the summer tourist season approaches, Montauk residents are sending a message to rowdy vacationers: keep it together, please.

Montauk used to be a sort of the anti-Hamptons, but these days if you’re anywhere near the downtown area on a summer night, you might ask yourself, “Did I just get transported to South Beach?”

Thomas Muse, an 11-year resident, told WCBS 880’s Stephanie Colombini that frustration peaked for locals last Fourth of July when more than 460 calls came into police about rowdy partiers.

“There were just too many people,” Muse said.

The town has made some changes in the past year, like increasing police presence and cracking down on code violations at bars and restaurants.

Mus said Montauk relies on summer tourism, but he just wants people to be respectful.

“Like if you’re partying on the beach, when you leave, there’s not a single trace that you were there,” he said.
