Sanders Holds Campaign Rally At Rutgers University

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is in New Jersey for a campaign rally at the state's flagship university.

Hundreds of people were waiting in line early Sunday afternoon, a few hours before the Vermont senator was due to speak at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.

The crowd was made up of many students who attend the university, but also included senior citizens.

"He's from my era and he's around the same age as we are and we believe the same things he believes in," one supporter told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

Although the senator has an uphill climb to be nominated, many are holding out hope and say they will not support Hillary Clinton if Sanders doesn't clinch the nomination.

Sanders addressed several issues at the rally, including his plans to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, combat climate change and ensure universal health care.

The rally is the first of two that Sanders has planned in New Jersey. The other is scheduled for Monday morning in Atlantic City.

Sanders currently trails front-runner Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary.

New Jersey voters head to the polls on June 7.
