3 Charged After Gun Goes Off In Attempted Robbery At St. John's Dorm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three suspects are now facing several charges after gunfire erupted during a robbery attempt at a dormitory at the St. John's University campus in Jamaica, Queens.

Mustafa Godbolt, 21, of North Babylon, Tyrell Sutton, 17, of North Babylon, and Anthony Gusthas, 18, of Queens, were arrested late Wednesday afternoon following the incident, police said.

The suspects knocked on the door of Room 510 in one of the school dormitories and confronted four male students – two of them 18 and two 19, NYPD sources told CBS2.

According to police, Sutton was armed with a knife and Godbolt -- a former St. John's student -- had a Smith & Weston .38 caliber revolver in his possession, sources said.

There was a quarrel, and the suspects demanded valuables, sources said.

One shot was fired by one of the suspects. The bullet hit a chair and pierced it before lodging in the wall, sources said.

The knife and the revolver were both recovered, and no one was injured, police said.

The suspects fled empty-handed, sources said. Three of them were caught on foot a short distance away at 167th Street and Grand Central Parkway, sources said.

Godbolt was charged with robbery, burglary, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, police said. He also faces criminal possession of a controlled substance after police found he was carrying 149 pills of Xanax.

Sutton was charged with robbery, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon, police said. Gusthas also faces robbery and burglary charges.

It was not immediately clear when the three suspects would appear in court.
