22 New Rochelle Students Fall Ill During School Trip To Washington

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- More than 20 eighth-grade students from New Rochelle got sick from possible food poisoning during a school trip to Washington, D.C.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, the school district said 22 of 68 students from Isaac E. Young Middle School on a three-day trip to the nation's capital came down with a stomach illness.

"Parents of children on the trip have been kept informed by on-site staff every step of the way, and all students are safe," the school district said.

The students left on the three-day field trip on Wednesday, but the trip took its turn for the worse on Thursday night during what sounded like a dinner cruise.

Reports of vomiting began around 9 p.m. Thursday and continued until 5 a.m. Friday, CBS2's Young reported.

Eighth grader Christina Ramposa initially felt left out from the trip, but her story changed when she found out what happened.

"I'm glad I didn't go," she said.

Christina said she exchanged Snapchat messages form several friends, and she heard the cruise was a joyous occasion for all – at first.

"My friends said they that were dancing on the boat, and it was fun until everybody started getting sick," she said.

Ten students were hospitalized for dehydration due to excessive vomiting, administrators said.

And on Friday, what should have been a travel day back to New Rochelle turned into a worry and wait day.

"They were supposed to be back already, but they keep going in and out of the emergency room from what I hear," said parent Veronica Ramposa.

The 75 students finally returned to New Rochelle by bus late Friday night.
