Severino Lands On Disabled List With Strained Right Triceps

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees pitcher Luis Severino shook his right arm and headed to the dugout in the middle of the third inning after yet another lousy start.

``You worry about it because we've seen a lot guys in the game of baseball have to go on the DL,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after Friday night's 7-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

A short while later, Yankees spokesman Michael Margolis announced Severino will go on the disabled list Saturday with a mild right triceps strain. The 22-year-old right-hander, who was sent to a hospital for an MRI, will not pick up a baseball for five-to-seven days.

``When someone leaves a game because of something in their elbow, you're really concerned,'' Girardi said.

But then he pointed to the forearm and said, ``It's better than when they point to here.''

Severino (0-6) gave up seven runs, seven hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings, raising his ERA to 7.46 and tying Minnesota's Phil Hughes for the big league lead in losses. With Severino on the disabled list, it appears Ivan Nova will remain in the rotation when CC Sabathia is eligible to come off the disabled list at the end of next week.

Still, the Yankees will have to find someone to take Severino's turn on Wednesday at Arizona.

Jimmy Rollins' two-run homer into the right-field second deck had put Chicago ahead 7-1 in the third, and Severino threw ball one to Jose Abreu. Girardi went to the mound with head athletic trainer Steve Donohue, and Nick Goody relieved.

``Just when he made that pitch, I just kind of noticed _ he kind of, he just looked funny,'' Girardi said. ``He said he felt something in the back of his arm.''

Severino made his big league debut last Aug. 5 and went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 11 starts. But this season he has the highest ERA in the major leagues among qualifying pitchers.

``Just struggled with command,'' catcher Austin Romine said.

Chris Sale (8-0) became the major leagues' first eight-game winner, pitching a six-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. The first White Sox pitcher to win his opening eight starts since Jon Garland in 2005, Sale retired 15 consecutive batters from the fourth through the eighth innings.

Sale did not throw more than 15 pitches in an inning and tossed a season-low 99 pitches in all. New York's only run scored on Chase Headley's second-inning homer as Sale lowered his ERA to 1.67.

Alex Avila's run-scoring double, his first RBI in 33 at-bats this season, put Chicago ahead in a three-run second, when Abreu hit a two-run, two-out single. Adam Eaton made it 5-1 in the four-run third with a two-run, two-out double over center fielder Aaron Hicks, who did not sprint back quickly enough and allowed the ball to sail over him.

Given an early lead, Sale dominated.

``I thought our guys put good at-bats on him tonight,'' Girardi said. ``He's ahead in the count. He throws strikes. He mixes his pitches.''

BERN, BABY, BERN

Former Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams received a Bachelor of Music degree on Friday from the Manhattan School of Music after four years studying jazz guitar.

GOOD-Y JOB

Goody allowed one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings, throwing 26 of 37 pitches for strikes.

SUDDEN SPURT

Headley homered for the second straight night, connecting on a 91 mph fastball after getting no extra-base hits in the Yankees' first 32 games.

SANCHEZ

Gary Sanchez, called up and inserted as designated hitter, struck out, lined out and grounded out twice. He was 0 for 2 last season, when he made his big league debut, and is likely to start Saturday against left-hander Jose Quintana.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Yankees: OF Jacoby Ellsbury, who hasn't played since straining a right hip muscle on May 6, is likely to be back in the lineup before the homestand ends Sunday, according to Girardi. --- Sabathia threw his first bullpen session Friday since going on the DL last week because of a strained groin.

UP NEXT

Quintana (5-1, AL-leading 1.38 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday against Nova (1-1), who moved into the rotation after Sabathia got hurt. Quintana is a former Yankees prospect.
