Music Icons Auction Gives Fans A Chance To Own A Piece Of Their Favorite Artist's Past

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you have ever dreamed of owning something from your favorite musician, you may soon get your chance.

As CBS2's Jill Nicolini reported, thousands of pieces of memorabilia are about to hit the auction block.

Over 400 of the items from the Music Icons auction from Julien's were on display at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Janis Joplin's dress, and Michael Jackson's beaded glove were there, but the most coveted item may be a Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar with its nickname 'Jimbo' carved into the back.

"Stevie Ray's favorite guitar. That's when he sold it. He regretted ever selling this guitar and he tried to get it back before he passed away in 1990," Martin Nolan, Executive Director, Julien's Auctions, said. "Estimated $400 to $600-thousand is the highest in the auction."

Other guitars up for auction include one which Kurt Cobain broke during a performance in Hoboken in 1989. It's estimated to sell for $30 to $40,000.

Elvis Presley's 1969 Gibson may be even more desirable.

"Elvis played the guitar from '71 to '75 at all his major performances. In 1975 Elvis gave it to a fan, Mike Harris, 21-years-of-age and said 'might be worth something someday," Nolan said, "We estimate the guitar $200 to $300,000."

The auction is very diverse.

"We have this drum skin from 'The Who' Keith Moon, 1969, possibly used at Woodstock as well, $180 to $200,000 on that," Nolan said.

The owner was inspired to sell after he saw Ringo Star's iconic drum skin that he used on the Ed Sullivan show for $2.1-million just last year.

"We have Lady Gaga's first piano when she was about age 5, and she wrote her very first song on that piano. A portion of the proceeds go to benefit the 'Born This Way Foundation' we estimate $100 to $200,000," Nolan said.

Also on the auction block is Madonna's jacket from the film Desperately Seeking Susan which is estimated to go for $100,000, and the King of Pop's 'Thriller' jacket he wore on tour can be yours with a starting bid of $10,000.

There were also more affordable items with starting bids of just $50 on an Elvis poster, BB Kind hand written song list, Jimi Hendrix press kit, etc.

The auction takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square and online at JuliensLive.com
