More Than 100 Fall Ill After Attending Events At Long Island's Swan Club

ROSLYN HARBOR, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of people have fallen ill after attending functions at the Swan Club event center on Long Island.

As CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported, more than 100 patrons of the well-known banquet hall overlooking Hempstead Harbor were home sick with fever, chills, vomiting and diarrhea on Wednesday.

Some even landed in the emergency room, after they attended multiple special events here with friends and families.

The swan club of Roslyn Harbor was ordered closed by Nassau County Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, who spoke to CBS2's McLogan Wednesday afternoon.

Eisenstein said the pathogen so far is unknown. It could have been carried in by a sick worker, a guest with the flu virus or, most likely, was food borne. Emergency testing was under way in the lab to isolate the source, but there Eisenstein said there was no reason to panic.

In recent days, the Swan Club has hosted baptisms, christenings, graduation parties, and birthdays.

"We've received reports that people who were at the Swan Club over the last weekend and few days – we're receiving reports of gastrointestinal illness. We're investigating more than 100 potential cases. We have not confirmed the pathogens. We don't know the exact source," Eisenstein said. Our food inspection teams are on site and are interviewing lists of people that have been to all the parties, and we are going to try to isolate exactly what the illness is, where it came from and why it was transmitted."

The Nassau County Board of Health is working closely with the catering hall. The board said the Swan Club is compliant and cooperative, and also eager to determine the cause – so that venue can be completely disinfected and decontaminated in in time for this weekend's many scheduled functions.

General manager Shelley Silver said all staffers are being tested to ensure they are not carrying a virus, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

In a statement released late Wednesday, the Swan Club said it hopes to have everything cleaned down and sanitized in time for Friday when it plans to reopen.
