Retired Suffolk County Sergeant Sentenced Again For Stealing During Traffic Stops

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A former Suffolk County police sergeant was sentenced for a second time this year, after being found guilty of pulling over Hispanic drivers and stealing from them.

Retired police Sgt. Scott Greene, a 25-year veteran, was arrested in January 2014 during an undercover sting operation. He was caught on surveillance video allegedly taking $100 cash from the front seat of a car driven by a Hispanic undercover detective.

Greene was sentenced to one to three years in prison in March after being found guilty in January 2016. After the verdict was reached, he pleaded with a judge to allow him to spend his sentence cleaning up a polluted park in Brentwood instead of serving time in prison.

Greene was denied of his request and was sentenced again to the same amount of time in prison, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported. The sentences will run at the same time.

"As in any other person who commits a crime, he should do his time in prison," victim advocate Irma Solis said.

At the time of Greene's arrest, he was suspected in at least three incidents, but Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota said that 22 more Hispanic men came forward and "six people positively identified Greene as the person who had stolen money from them."

The alleged traffic stops and thefts occurred in Farmingville, Medford and Coram, according to prosecutors. Each victim was robbed of approximately $50 to $100, authorities said.
