Social Media Buzzes With #NextBond As Fans Weigh In On 007's Future

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There could be a battle brewing over James Bond. Rumors are circulating that Daniel Craig turned down a $100-million offer to reprise his role.

There's a lot of speculation on who could take over with some saying the new bond could even be a woman.

As CBS2's Jill Nicolini reported, social media is buzzing with fans using the hashtag #NextBond in hopes that their voices will be heard.

"I think a lot of people want to see a female bond because we are at a period in history where studios are starting to understand that audiences want more female driven movies -- so we are getting an all female Ghostbusters reboot," Erik Davis, Managing Editor, Fandango.com explained, "I personally love Emily Blunt, we could be looking at Jennifer Lawrence who is big in the Hunger Games and the X-Men movies."

Davis said he's skeptical that they will end up casting a female 007.

"The producers of the bond series have always been about honoring what's come before to what he wears to what he drives. I could see them casting a 008 that's a female and maybe building her up to rival Bond. Perhaps this is a character that can have her own spinoff movie," he said.

So how would fans feel about a female Bond?

"I love it. I think it's a great idea," Edward Berkise said.

"I would love it, that would be amazing," Chelsea Thompson added.

Spectre was the 24th Bond film to open in theaters last November, and since then there ha sbeen no talk of when the next installment is due. What we do know is that the film rights to distribute are up and the producers have teased an announcement coming soon.

A few male actors are also being talked about as the next James Bond, two of the favorites are Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston.
