Thousands Take Advantage Of Beach Weather Ahead Of Memorial Day Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There were no stormy skies and it felt like the perfect day on Wednesday, at Jones Beach where sand and surf lovers have a lot to look forward to.

Blue skies, sunshine, and the entire summer ahead -- that's the enticing combination that drew many to the beach as finishing touches were being put on a new and improved experience.

Paul Kleinberg staked his claim to a front row seat at Jones Beach, days ahead of Memorial Day weekend, but none too soon.

"In every single book that talks about the best beaches in the world Jones Beach is always top ten," he told CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff.

It's also the most popular beach on the East Coast, and eager visitors got a sneak peek at acrobatic planes that will thrill weekend crowds, as well as the results of millions in park renovations.

It was all part of a multi-year effort to restore the iconic, nearly century old facilities, to their former grandeur.

The west bathhouse was sparkling after an outside restoration and interior renovation. It's now home to a new 'Taste NY' shop and ocean view catering perched above a brand new pool deck.

Field 6 boasts new concessions too, and it all officially opens on Saturday, but on Wednesday summer like weather and crowds made a debut.

"You snap your fingers and the summer is gone, so we have to take advantage of it every day," one beach-goer said.

Palm trees signaled the launch of Long Island's legendary beach club season.

Kathi Furia of Merrick was on a waiting list for 15 years to finally score a cabana at Malibu Beach Club.

"Yeah it's beautiful here. You have showers, don't have to worry about bringing the sand home," she said.

Further west in Long Beach the boardwalk will, for the first time in decades have food concessions, five new buildings with showers, a surf center, and food -- but no fries or greasy burgers.

"That's not what anyone wants, so we have local businesses offering up fresh clams and oysters or burritos. What people want to eat with healthy options," Councilman Anthony Eramo, Long Beach City Council said.

Lifeguards don't take their posts until Saturday, but that didn't stop thousands of the winter weary from turning up on Wednesday. Many said they'll return over the weekend for an airshow featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. That show takes place from 10 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
