13-Year-Old Boy Bitten By Shark At Florida Beach Left With 8-Inch Gash

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. (CBSNewYork)-- A 13-year-old boy was bitten by a shark at a Florida beach on Sunday.

"All of a sudden we hear a yell of someone saying, 'Oh my God, he got bit,'" witness Lou Denmark said.

Denmark said he was sitting on the shore of Neptune Beach with his fiance when they saw a boy being pulled from the water, CBS2's Cindy Hsu reported.

"This lady runs in the water, carries this boy out from the water and all you see is just blood dripping and dripping for about 50 feet," Denmark said.

Shortly after 3 p.m. emergency crews were called to Neptune Beach, just east of Jacksonville. Police said the boy and his stepfather were about chest-deep in the ocean when the shark attacked.

"I was watching them put bandaging on the boy's leg and he was crying," witness Frank Gamble said.

A beach-goer captured cellphone video of the incident. Police said the shark left an 8-inch bite right behind the victim's right knee.

"The father got on top of his son and was trying to calm him down and gave him a hug. While he was talking to him, he says 'I can't feel my toes' or something, so he was hurting," Gamble said.

Police believe the shark is about 6 feet long. The boy is being treated at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
