White House Placed On Lockdown After Woman Throws Metal Object Over Fence

WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The White House was placed on lockdown Monday afternoon after a woman threw something over the north fence along Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Secret Service said in a statement that an individual threw a metal object over the north fence.

According to CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, the suspect was detained and she was placed in handcuffs.

The Secret Service said the suspect was apprehended without incident.

Fire trucks and a hazardous materials response unit were called to the scene. It is common for officers to sweep the grounds after such incidents to ensure nothing dangerous was thrown over the fence.

The Secret Service said all protective sweeps of the object were met with negative results and that the White House has returned to normal operations.

President Barack Obama was at Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns to mark Memorial Day.
