Clinton Changes Schedule As California Primary Race Tightens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Hillary Clinton has changed her schedule this week to spend more time in California ahead of that state's primary as polls show the Democratic front-runner in a tight race with rival Bernie Sanders.

Clinton has canceled campaign stops in New Jersey and is instead heading to California on Thursday, where 475 Democratic delegates are at stake in the state's primary next Tuesday.

Right now, California polls have Clinton and Sanders in an extremely close race. The latest poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows Clinton just two points ahead of Sanders, at 46 to 44 percent respectively.

On Monday, Sanders was at the NBA Western Conference finals where the Golden State Warriors came back to win after being a game away from elimination.

"They turned it around," Sanders said. "That's what our campaign is gonna do as well."

Clinton could lose California but still win enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination. But not winning the primary could potentially hurt her in the general election in a match up against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, California Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday that he is endorsing Clinton.

In an open letter, Brown writes that Clinton has the best shot at stopping Trump, whose candidacy he calls "dangerous.''

The governor said that while he's impressed with how well Sanders has done, he believes a Clinton candidacy is the only path forward for Democrats to win the presidency.

Brown said Clinton's lead over Sanders is insurmountable. He points out that voters have given her about 3 million more votes and hundreds more delegates.

He said that with Clinton's long experience, especially as secretary of state, she has a firm grasp of the issues and will be prepared to lead on day one.
