Free Wi-Fi, Charging Stations Coming To More NYC Parks, Beaches

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The city is making it easier to power up at the park.

On Tuesday, officials announced a deal with AT&T to expand free public Wi-Fi service to 21 parks across the five boroughs. The deal also brings solar mobile charging stations to 15 city parks and beaches, including Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx where the announcement was made.

"Now it gives them a chance to stay out in our green public spaces, enjoy themselves, charge up their phone, sit on a bench and just scroll, scroll, scroll," Parks Commissioner Mitch Silver said. "This is consistent with New York City's brand, we're smart and we want to use smart technology to connect people."

The 10-foot high charging stations can handle six devices at a time, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"We have every possible type of charger so that no matter what kind of phone you have you can plug in and quickly get a little juice," AT&T New York President Marissa Shorenstein said.

The deal runs for five years.
