Disney Star Laura Marano Talks Music Career, New Hit 'Boombox' And Self-Empowerment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Disney star Laura Marano stopped by to talk about her music career and new hit single "Boombox" with 1010 WINS' digital reporter Rebecca Granet.

The "Austin & Ally" actress and singer was nominated for a Teen Choice Award and has a new album coming out after signing with Big Machine Records in March. The first single off the album, "Boombox," has over 26 million views on YouTube alone.

"I actually recorded 'Boombox' in August and it took a second because we were looking for the right first single. There was another song that was potentially going to be the first single, but I didn't think it was going to be that song to transition my fans from knowing me as an actress into an artist," Marano said.

From the sound to the lyrics to the story, the actress-turned-pop star said it was the perfect way to make her debut. But determining what songs make the cut onto the album proved to be a bit more challenging.

"I've been writing for this album for years. My sound has kind of changed and transformed and become so many different things. I still have some great songs that I love from the past, but you can only have so many songs on an album. Every time I write, I feel like I grow more," she said. "It's an ever-changing process."

Marano said some themes throughout the album are self-empowerment, acceptance, and romance.

"I think the album as a whole to me is about pushing through even though people might hold you back and there might be obstacles. As long as you believe in yourself and fight for what you want then you'll get what you want," she said.
