Fashion Trends: What To Wear This Summer

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The temperatures are finally heating things up and you don't want to miss out on the summer essentials trending this year.

Fashion expert George Brescia took CBS2's Cindy Hsu to Purdy Girl on the Upper West Side to explore the best trends of the season.

COLD SHOULDER TOP

Brescia calls the cold shoulder top "very sexy, without being too revealing." Showing off the shoulder reveals just enough skin, while still giving a classy and beautiful look.

ALL WHITE OUTFIT

For a fresh and summer feeling go "all white" with your outfit from head to toe. This could include a white sandal with chunky heels, which elongates the whole look. Brescia suggests adding a pop of color with a cute bag.

FLOPPY HAT

Save yourself from sunburn, with a floppy hat. Think bohemian 70s inspired.

BOYFRIEND JEANS

Boyfriend jeans are another must-have for essential summer looks. The fit should be a little bit looser and relaxed than your typical jeans and you can spice things up with a distressed or ripped style. Don't forget to roll them up a bit on the bottom to show your ankles.

FLORAL PRINTS

Floral prints are blooming. From patterned pants to dresses to blouses, flower-power is everywhere.

SUMMER '16 DON'TS

Brescia says to just say no this summer to denim leggings, cropped denim jackets, and long flowy prairie skirts.

"I think it's really important to find the trend that works for you. For your body type, for your skin tone, for your eye color. You have to feel good in your clothes, then we see the version of you that is the best," Brescia said.

We haven't forgotten about the men, either! Experts say you can bag the baggy cargo shorts and go for more fitted, flat-front, cotton shorts. Also, grab some striped shirts-- whether it's a casual nautical t-shirt or a dressier oxford with vertical stripes.
