Man Charged With Robbing, Beating Woman In Gramercy Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly beating a woman unconscious in Gramercy Park last month.

Frankie Simmons, 25, was charged with robbery, assault and strangulation in the incident on Sunday, May 29, police said.

Police alleged the suspect came up to the 30-year-old woman from behind in a building near East 18th Street and First Avenue. He placed her in a chokehold and dragged her to the floor, police alleged.

The woman tried to fight back, but the suspect punched her in the face numerous times until she was unconscious, police alleged.

When the woman regained consciousness, the suspect was gone, police said. The woman also realized her cellphone was missing and her underwear had been lowered to her knees, police said.

The woman was rushed to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital for an evaluation, police said.

The woman was for injuries to her face, head, neck and legs, police sources told CBS2.
