Man Detained After Reports Of Shooter Or Hostages At Albuquerque City Hall

ALBUQUERQUE (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said a man was being held after reports of a possible shooter or hostage situation in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico Monday evening.

CBS affiliate KRQE-TV, Albuquerque reported that police said a man ran into the treasurer's office and said someone was shooting.

Police conducted a floor-by-floor search of City Hall after the report. They set up a perimeter around the Albuquerque Civic Plaza and City Hall, and called in SWAT teams, KRQE reported.

Meetings were being held at the Albuquerque City Hall at the time of the incident, KRQE reported.
Police believe the situation may have been the result of a hoax, but they were not taking any chances. The search of City Hall was expected to take a couple of hours.

Employees were escorted away from the building by officers in tactical gear. No injuries were reported.

Late Monday, police spokesman Tanner Tixier said officers had detained a man who was believed to be ``the initiator'' of the incident that led employees to call 911.

Tixier said the man had previous contact with the police department's crisis intervention unit and was known to have issues.
