FBI Issues New Warning About 'Ransomware'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The FBI is issuing a new warning about the rise of cybercrime, specifically "ransomware."
"Ransomware" is a type of malware that encrypts all of the files on a computer and a hacker demands a ransom to decrypt the system, explained Rich Jacobs of the FBI's Cyber Division.
"In 2015 alone, we received about 2,400 of these complaints with total estimated losses of about $24 million," Jacobs said.
Sometimes hackers will target family photos and documents.
"Maybe you did your taxes this year at home or you have your family's vacation pictures on there as well that are valuable to you, and you're going to be willing to pay the $200, $300, $400 to make sure you get that back," said Aristedes Mahairas, special agent in charge of the Special Operations/Cyber Division of the New York Field Office.
Officials urge users to practice good computer hygiene.
"If you don't recognize the email, move that over into the junk email," Mahairas said.
Experts say it's important to back up your files, and avoid clicking on suspicious links.
