Developer Proposes 1,200-Foot-High Thrill Ride At Penn Station
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As if riding the LIRR weren't thrilling enough, one developer has an idea for a more thrills at Penn Station.
Brooklyn Capital Partners is proposing a 1,200-foot high free-fall tower ride to be placed on top of either the transit hub or on the back of the James A. Farley Post Office building.
"This is New York's high-tech version of the Eiffel Tower: a thrill ride taller than the Empire State Building, and an unforgettable icon on the skyline," according to the project's website.
"The Halo" would accommodate 11 rides of varying speeds around the perimeter of the steel lattice tower. The fastest would be a six-second free fall at 100 miles an hour, 1010 WINS' John Montone reported.
Reaction in Penn Station was mixed.
"I think it's a little crazy," a man who works at Penn Station said.
"They can't even build a new tunnel in here for trains to come through and they're going to do that?" one NJ TRANSIT conductor said.
One cab driver said he would definitely take a ride.
"I can fly without wings," the cabbie said.
