Albany Lawmakers Seek Compromises To End 2016 Session

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York's Legislature will return to Albany Friday hoping to wrap up the 2016 session.

Lawmakers had planned to adjourn Thursday but couldn't agree on the renewal of a policy giving Mayor Bill de Blasio control of New York City schools. The Republican-led Senate supports a one-year extension while the Assembly Democratic majority wants a longer period.

De Blasio warned that without mayoral control, the school system could go back to "chaos and corruption," WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"I think the message has been received loud and clear in Albany and now it's time for them to decide," he said.

One potential compromise emerged Thursday night that involves tying mayoral control of schools to ethics reforms. In exchange for the Assembly agreeing to a one-year extension of mayoral control, the Senate would agree to the Assembly's version of a possible Constitutional amendment to strip pensions from corrupt lawmakers. The amendment would ultimately need voter approval.

Lawmakers have already agreed to proposals to address opioid addiction and expand breast cancer screening.
