VIDEO: Bear Takes Dip In New Jersey Couple's Pool

MENDHAM, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A bear tried to beat the heat in a New Jersey couple's pool.

CBS2's Meg Baker reported the bear decided to take a dip in the McNeill family pool on Horizon Drive in Mendham.

"I ran into the house and just yelled, 'It's the bear, it's the bear, he's in the pool,'" Joan McNeill said.

She continued, "I just glanced over at the shallow end and a very large black bear was just coming down the steps to go for a swim. I didn't hear a splash or a noise, he was so quiet."

Her husband, Ron McNeill, grabbed an iPad to film the encounter.

"When it crept towards the shallow end I retreated back in toward the house," he said.

The family said they watched the bear do laps for more than 15 minutes in their pool.

"He got out of the pool, shook himself off and Ron followed him with the iPad down the driveway across the street," Joan McNeill said.

That's where they said bears often get into their neighbor's trash.

Over in Byram Township, another bear was caught on camera in someone's backyard doing everything it can to get all the food from the bird feeder.

"Human encroachment into the forest leads to many more animal issues coming our way," Luca Fariello of the Got Wildlife Technician said.

Fariello said it's all about food and shelter as it's a quicker bite to eat from the trash than foraging the woods.

"They are very aquatic," Fariello said. "They love the water, they love swimming."

Fariello's main advice is people should invest in animal-proof garbage cans and fence-in their yards.
