Collins Takes Out Frustration On Mets' PR Director At News Conference

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- There may have been three injuries that came from the Mets' win Wednesday over the Royals: Yoenis Cespedes' wrist, Noah Syndergaard's elbow and Jay Horwitz's feelings.

Clearly frustrated, Mets manager Terry Collins resorted to name-calling when Horwitz, the team's public relations director, urged the skipper to address Syndergaard's status at his postgame news conference.

"The puppy dog wants you guys to know that Noah Syndergaard's seeing the doctor," Collins said. "His elbow flared up on him. That's why I took him out of the game."

Collins then stormed out of the room.

WFAN's Mike Francesa opened his show by ripping Collins for his treatment of Horwitz.

"What was he pulling there?" Francesa said of Collins. "First of all, everybody, like us here back at the FAN, we already knew the news. He wasn't hiding anything. The reason there was no questions on it (from reporters at the news conference) because I'm sure the guys who were there in the room did not know about it. Otherwise, they, of course, would have led with what is a headline, the fact that Syndergaard has some elbow misery and is going to the hospital to get it checked out. That's a headline.

"Why would you then embarrass a PR guy -- and Jay Horwitz, who's one of the nicest guys and best guys in the business and has been there 40 years -- why would you treat him like that? All of a sudden because Terry Collins won some games last year and went to the World Series, now he's a tough guy? I mean, that was obnoxious. He owes Jay a public apology."

Syndergaard was removed after six innings. He allowed three runs and eight hits and improved his record to 8-2.

Both he and Cespedes, who left after the fifth inning with a wrist injury, were headed to the Hospital for Special Surgery on Wednesday to be evaluated.
