Police Fatally Shoot Man In Paterson

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a police shooting that left a man dead in Paterson.

The shooting took place around 2 a.m. Friday in the area of Summer and Cedar streets.

Witnesses told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck they heard multiple gunshots prompting the police to come to the area. Once there, the man was shot.

Two plainclothes officers said they were approached by a man who began firing at them, CBS2's Steve Langford reported. The officers say they returned fire.

Neighbors told Schuck they saw two suspects get away in a car, but one was shot multiple times and killed.

The officers were not injured. But Police Director Jerry Speziale says they were treated for trauma.

One man spoke to Schuck and identified the person who was shot dead as his son-in-law, Israel Miranda.

"Everybody has a little fun now and then, but they're trying to say he carries guns. He's not known for carrying no guns," Jubreel LeBron said. "He's got four kids, he's got one kid with my daughter, but he's not a gun person. That's what they keep saying: That he had a gun. Israel - they call him Iz - he does not carry any guns."

Grieving family members went to the scene, Langford reported.

"He was just a good person," one relative told Langford.

The victim was recovering from a previous shooting in which he was hit by a stray bullet, LeBron said.
