Suffolk Police Stepping Up DWI, BWI Patrols For 4th Of July Weekend

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Suffolk County Police Department wants to make sure the 4th of July holiday is a safe one for all.

The department will be adding patrols this weekend to crackdown on drivers and boaters under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Police will also crackdown on people who illegally possess, sell or use fireworks. Just last week, police announced an Oakdale man was arrested for selling fireworks through Craigslist.

"They're explosives, and they're extremely dangerous explosives," Police Commissioner Tim Sini said. "You're asking for trouble."

On Tuesday, the department demonstrated how dangerous fireworks are by blowing up a garage-sized shed with packages of consumer and commercial-grade fireworks at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank.

Thousands of people are seriously hurt every year by fireworks.

"Leave it to the professionals," Sini said.
