Mourners Hold Vigil In Union Square After Istanbul Airport Attack

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Turkish-Americans and other New Yorkers held a vigil in Union Square Wednesday night, a day after a terrorist attack left 42 people dead at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul.

Some people held signs condemning the attack at the vigil, while others shared their thoughts on giant sheets of paper in both Turkish and English.

The sheets will be sent to Istanbul.

Also Wednesday, the spire at the top of the Empire State Building was dark in commemoration of the victims of the attack.

More than 230 people were also wounded in the attack Istanbul attack on Tuesday.

Authorities blamed the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria for the blood bath that happened late Tuesday. It was a coordinated assault on one of the world's busiest airports and on a key NATO ally that plays a crucial role in the fight against the extremist group.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility by the terror group.

CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan reported the current working theory is the attackers may have been Chechen jihadists from southwest Russia who could have links to ISIS.
