Police: 7 People Shot During Fourth Of July Barbecue In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Seven people were shot during a Fourth of July barbecue in Brooklyn in one of more than one dozen shootings across the city on Monday night.

The gunfire broke out around 11:30 p.m. Monday in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police said the shooter wasn't invited to the party and when he was turned away, he began firing his gun through the gate at the partygoers, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

"I heard a bunch of ruckus, a bunch of people screaming, loud noises -- bang, bang, bang -- and kids running through the backyard just scattering," said Adam Martinez, who heard the gunfire from his Chauncey Street apartment after returning home from a day trip to New Jersey. "It was crazy."

Four men and three women sustained non-life threatening injuries. The victims are in their late teens to early 20s. Police said they are all in stable condition.

"It's the neighborhood, things like that happen in Brooklyn here and there, but for something like this to happen on Independence Day is tragic," Martinez said.

Investigators say nearly two dozen people were injured in other shootings in Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens and the Bronx, D'Auria reported.
