Police Probe Man's Stabbing Death In Building's Boiler Room In Queens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation is underway in the stabbing death of a building superintendent in Queens.
Residents said a friend found Gary Nelson, 50, unconscious in the boiler room on the basement level of 123-27 Merrick Boulevard just after 2:30 p.m. Monday.
"They told me the guy was stabbed, I said, 'What?' I was shocked," said resident Kojo Robertson. "The last time I saw him, it was 12 o'clock. He was moving the garbage from here when I spoke to him."
Police said he had stab wounds to the chest. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Residents told CBS2 Nelson was and immigrant from Jamacia who worked as the building's superintendent for nearly a decade. They say he lived in an apartment near the boiler room where he was found, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.
The loss was felt by many residents, who considered Nelson a friend.
"You always have problems with tenants and stuff like that, but on the whole, I think he was a good guy," said Robertson.
Police have not yet released the man's name pending family notification.
The investigation is ongoing.
