Chemical Spill Leaves Drivers Stranded For Hours On Sprain Brook Parkway

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Drivers are back on the road again after a crash on the Sprain Brook Parkway that caused a chemical spill and hours of delays.

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, a multi-car crash in the southbound lane of the Sprain Brook Parkway south of Ardsley Road in Greenburgh, caused a chemical spill across several lanes, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

Drivers sat in the dark and in the heat for roughly four hours as workers scrambled to clean up the mess of hydrochloric acid on the roadway.

At midnight, Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner received an email from a stranded motorist, who was still stuck in traffic.

"They said get some police assistance to Sprain -- have been sitting for over three hours now," Feiner said.

The driver continued, telling Feiner that some drivers began turning around and driving the wrong way on the highway -- creating potentially dangerous conditions without police supervision.

"People were very, very frustrated and angry," Feiner said. "So I really believe that New York State police should investigate."

While waiting, some drivers reportedly spent the time playing guitar and practicing their golf swing, Adams reported.
