NYPD: Burglary Suspect Dead In Brooklyn Police Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One burglary suspect was killed in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn Monday night, while another remained on the loose.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, investigators late Monday night were taking pictures of the sidewalk where police said officers had to shoot the armed suspect.

Police said they received a 911 call that an armed burglary was taking place around 6:45 p.m. at 2771 78th St., near Stillwell Avenue, in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn.

Two suspects were involved. When officers arrived, one suspect pushed out an air conditioning unit on the third floor and climbed down the fire escape, police said.

The suspect then scaled a fence, where he was met by waiting officers, NYPD's Chief of Department James O'Neill said during a news conference.

"The suspect pointed a revolver at the sergeant. Both the sergeant and another uniformed police officer discharged their service weapons," O'Neill said. "The male subject was struck twice."

WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported the suspect was so close to police that he pushed an officer's arm aside.

"It was close," he said. "As the suspect came over the wall, the sergeant was right there, so he had to actually push his arm away, So it was close, real close."

The suspect's gun was recovered, according to police.

The other suspect escaped, police said.

Residents in the area heard the gunfire.

"I knew it was something big like a gun, because I heard the boom from my living room," said Anna Roman. "I actually jumped – I was like, 'Whoa, something happened.'"

Investigators used yellow evidence markers to point out a pair of gloves, possibly dropped by the suspect who got away.

A police K9 was also brought in.

Several adults and an infant inside the home at the time of the home invasion were uninjured. But residents nearby were in shock.

"You never hear of anything like this happening around here," said Jason Sherman. "This is a very safe neighborhood."

Two officers were also hospitalized for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.

Police described the suspect who escaped as a heavy-set black male who was wearing a yellow construction hat.

This is the second police-involved shooting in Brooklyn in as many days. On Sunday, police said a man was shot after pointing a gun at officers in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.
