Green Light Confusion Raises Accident Concerns At Bronx Intersection
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 5-way intersection in the Bronx has created a number of headaches, mishaps, and even accidents for drivers.
As CBS2's Emily Smith explained, drivers said the intersection has conflicting green lights, and a hidden red light.
"No one stops for that red light, no one stops for it. It should not be there, make it visible," Oswald Millan said.
Drivers said when the light heading north on Soundview turns green a driver makes the left, but heading into the same intersection drivers are getting a green light from Taylor Avenue which merges into Soundview -- that's where Millan collided his bus with a taxi earlier this month.
"If you had a green arrow you're safe, or there should be a red light for the person on Taylor," Millan said.
Drivers said there used to be a stop sign there allowing drivers to make the left turn safely.
"Near misses happen every day. Everybody in the neighborhood says this, bus operators say it, and unfortunately I was the one who had the accident," Millan said.
A bush at Taylor Ave prevents drivers from seeing what's ahead. Even when a driver heading toward Taylor Ave does obey the red light they're stuck in the crosswalk.
"Now, if you make a left turn and you stop in the middle of the intersection you are breaking the law. If you take the red light you are breaking the law, and the car on Taylor has the right of way, and you crash," Millan said
For now, many drivers just want to know whose bright idea this was, and hope it isn't the scene of another accident.
CBS2 tried to contact the Department of Transportation, but did not get a reply. Some neighbors said they were told after repeated complaints that the DOT is looking into it.
