Safety Hazards Discovered At Conn. Day Care Days After Death Of Child

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A surprise inspection at a day care center in Stamford revealed numerous safety hazards, including a work station holding fencing slats with nails sticking out, and a curling iron plugged into a lamp near a sleeping child.

The discovery comes one week after two-month-old Bella Redondo was rushed to the hospital after having trouble breathing while at Little Bears Beginnings Daycare. She was rushed Stamford Hospital, where she later died.

According to Stanford Polie Lieutenant Diedrick Hohn, the child died from blunt force trauma to the head, WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported.

The child's parents said Redondo was in perfect health when she was dropped off at the center that morning.

The child's death is still under investigation.

Hohn says criminal charges could be brought against the center following the discovery of these violations.

"I don't want to jump the gun and say 'well, we're going to charge somebody --' but when we do, we will confer with the state's attorneys office and hopefully bring closure to this case," Hohn said.

The day care's license has been suspended.
