NYPD: Baby Found Safe After Mother Allegedly Abducts Her From Foster Care Center

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 6-month-old baby was found safe after the mother illegally abducted the child from a foster care center in the Bronx early Wednesday afternoon, police say.

After hours of searching, the mother and daughter were found safe in Brooklyn, WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz reported. Charges are pending against the mother.

According to police, the mother of the child took the baby from The New York Foundling Community Services center at 170 Brown Place in the Mott Haven section around 12:15 p.m.

Police said the mother of the child was at the center on supervised visitation, but does not have custody, CBS2's Dick Brennan reported.

The woman was somehow able to leave the building with the child and fled in an unknown direction, police said.

The NYPD said the mom is around 33 years old. Authorities are still determining how the woman was able to escape the building as many of those familiar said that there is a high level of security in the facility.

The foster care facility has signs posted on its door asking people to securely close the door behind them and is reportedly under 24/7 surveillance.
