Michelle Obama: Hillary Clinton Only 'Person Truly Qualified To Be President'

PHILADELPHIA (CBSNewYork/AP) -- First lady Michelle Obama said this election will determine the future of America's children.

Speaking before the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, Mrs. Obama said that this election "will have the power to shape our children for the next four to eight years of our lives."

"I am here tonight because in this election, there is only one person I trust with that responsibility, only one person who is truly qualified to be president, and that is our friend Hillary Clinton," Obama said.

Obama said she trusts Clinton to "lead this country" because of her lifelong devotion to America's children.

"She never buckles under pressure, she never takes the easy way out and Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life," she said.

The first lady took swipes at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump without mentioning by him, saying that "when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, we don't stoop to their level."

"When they go low, we go high," Obama said.

She poked fun at Trump tweeting, saying the job of president "cannot be boiled down to 140 characters."

"I want a president who will teach our children that everyone in this country matters. That we are all created equal," Obama said. "And when crises hits, we don't turn against each other -- we listen to each other, we lean on each other because we are always stronger together."

The first lady got choked up talking about how her daughters play on the White House's front lawn with their dogs, in a home that was built by slaves.

"Because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States," Obama said.

She continued, "So don't let anyone ever tell you this country isn't great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because right now, this is the greatest country on Earth."

She also said that everyone needs to take part in this election and not get disillusioned.

"In this election, we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for the best," Obama said. "We cannot afford to be tired, or frustrated or cynical."
