Outside workers and the elderly are keeping hospital emergency rooms busy these hot and humid days, Nassau University Medical president Dr. Victor Politi told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs.

"And the construction industry, someone who is out in the sun, a lot of landscapers and gardeners," Politi said.

Politi says to limit your time in the sun, and to keep hydrated. Also keep an eye on pets, children and the elderly, who are more prone to heat-related illnesses.

"Never, ever leave them in car. Never leave anybody in a car," Politi said.

Heat exhaustion and dehydration can happen fast, so be safe.

Staggering temperatures and powerful summer thunderstorms have slammed the Tri-State area through the last week, bringing on damage, downed trees, flooding, power outages and uncomfortable conditions for residents.

A heat advisory is still in effect in the New York City area until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

High temperatures are expected to climb into the high 80s and low 90s across much of the state through Thursday before more moderate weather arrives Friday.
