Lightning Strikes Long Island Home, Sets Attic Ablaze

GREENLAWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A house on Long Island caught on fire after being struck by lightning Monday afternoon.

Owner Ruth Taylor said lightning struck her home on Rosemont Court in Greenlawn shortly after the storms began around 4 p.m., WCBS 880's Sophia Hall said.

"I hear BOOM! A loud sound and I didn't know what it was and the phone went dead," Taylor said. "The power went out immediately. My daughter who was home upstairs about take a shower comes running down the stairs screaming, I smell smoke! I smell something."

When her family left the house, they noticed the attic of their home was on fire.

"We saw the back of the house where the attic is and it was flames coming right up from the attic," Taylor said.

Taylor said a portion of the second floor was damaged, but is grateful everyone got out safely.
