Child Killed, Mother Critically Injured When Car Hits Them In Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A 3-year-old child was killed and a mother was in critical condition after they were struck by a car as they crossed the street in Plainfield, New Jersey Wednesday.

As CBS2's Steve Langford reported, a damaged empty stroller was a haunting sight in the middle of the street behind the red car that struck the mother and child, as they crossed Park Avenue at West Second Street in Plainfield around 9 a.m.

"I see her mother on the floor. She was crying. She was in shock," said witness William Alvayero.

The mother and child were rushed to a nearby hospital where the child died, police said.

"People were everywhere. Some people were crying and stuff. It was just a lot," said witness Aaliyah Bradshaw.

Police said the car was headed south on Park when the mother and the 3-year-old were crossing. Witnesses said they were accompanied by other children.

Police late Wednesday had released few details about who may have been at fault, but whether it was a tragic accident or recklessness, the impact was unforgiving.

The grim scene was terribly upsetting to those who witnessed the mid-morning mishap.

"It's a baby stroller and I was just kind of shocked," a woman said.

The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating, according to police.

Police said it was premature to say whether the driver will face any charges.
