Cuomo: 'Soul Of America' At Stake

PHILADELPHIA (CBSNewYork) -- Seeking to echo his father's keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the "soul of America" is at stake this presidential election.

Cuomo described the Trump campaign as trying to market fear to Americans before heading to the polls in November.

"The Trump campaign is marketing a great distraction, using people's fear and anxiety to drive his ratings. Their message comes down to this: Be afraid of people who are different – different religions, different colors, different language. Stop immigration and the nation will automatically rise.

"It's not right, it's divisive, it's delusional, and we must expose the truth," Cuomo stated.

Cuomo told the crowd that fear "is a powerful weapon" that can bring people into power, however, that fear is truly a weakness.

"Fear is not strength. Fear is weakness, and no matter how loud you yell, our America is never weak," Cuomo said.

Citing his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo who died last year, the governor of New York told those at the DNC that progressive government works.

"And we did it together, without leaving anyone out or anyone behind, because we believe that we are interconnected and interrelated. There is a cord that connects you to you and you to you," Cuomo said. "Maybe you can't see it, but it's there, and it weaves the fabric of community, and when one of us is raised we're all raised, and when one of us is lowered we're all lowered."

Cuomo also talked about his time working in former President Bill Clinton's administration.

"I've seen her in the trenches. I've seen her in the good days, I've seen her in the bad days. She stood on the world stage and declared that human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights. She fought for health care for all Americans. As secretary of state, she repaired America's reputation worldwide. And she won't just shatter the glass ceiling … she also has the vision and qualifications to be a transformative force. She will unify, not divide this nation and she will move us forward together as one. That's why we must make Hillary Clinton the next president of these United States of America," Cuomo exclaimed.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke at the DNC on Wednesday.
