Cops Could Be In Hot Water Over Involvement In Queens Marriage Proposal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three police officers set up a fake traffic stop in Queens as part of a man's marriage proposal.

As CBS2's Ali Bauman reported, the move has those officers in hot water.

It was a proposal that some have called indecent. It started at the residential corner of Mobile Road and Reads Lane in Far Rockaway on Wednesday. Three uniformed police officers pulled over Hudi Coriat and his girlfriend Sorah Oppen.

Video of the proposal was uploaded to YouTube.

Friends of the pair commented as they recorded the stop on their phones.

"She's bugging out," one is heard saying.

The boyfriend was in on it. When officers started to search the car and opened the trunk, out came balloons, flowers, and one big question.

She said yes, but not the NYPD is investigating the officers for participating in the stunt. CBS2's Hazel Sanchez asked the police commissioner Monday, the repercussions could be.

"They could face discipline if it was found their behavior was inappropriate," Bratton said.

Some in the neighborhood have defended the officers, and said it was all innocent fun.

"Cops are gonna be scared to help people with more fun things if they're scared of always getting in trouble, and I think that's bad for the police officer-civilian relationship," Shoshana Gable said.

Ava and Morty Strauss have been married for decades, but when it comes to boundaries for the NYPD they're torn.

"I understand he wanted something interesting and different, but I don't approve of it at all," Ava said.

"I thought it was great PR for the cops to do this. It shows there's a human heart in there," Morty countered.

Congratulations for the couple, but an uncertain future for the officers.

The investigation is being monitored by the 101 precinct commander.

Right now, it is still uncertain if those officers were on duty at the time and whether or not they;ll be penalized.
