Brandon Marshall Tells Reporters Ryan Fitzpatrick Is An 'Elite' Quarterback

Bryan Altman

While most of Jets nation is thrilled that the contract stalemate with incumbent starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is over, the more pragmatic Jets fans still recognize exactly what Fitzpatrick is and what he is not when it comes to playing the position of quarterback in the NFL.

For example: He is a 33-year-old journeyman quarterback who has played for six NFL teams, has a career losing record as a starter (43-61-1) and has never taken a team to, or played in an NFL playoff game in his 11-year career.

To be fair, he also is the Jets' all-time leader in touchdowns in one season (31) thanks to last year's performance and is in all likelihood the Jets' best chance to make the playoffs in 2016.

But one thing I think we can all agree on, is that Ryan Fitzpatrick, is not, under any circumstances - no matter how green-tinted the lenses you may view him through might be - an elite NFL quarterback.

Brandon Marshall, the Jets' No. 1 wide receiver and an ardent Fitzpatrick supporter, disagrees.

Of course, as his teammate, Marshall is probably just trying to show his quarterback how much confidence he has in him, which is a noble idea, but let's pump the breaks on the elite talk.

Maybe Fitzpatrick has another magical year and leads the Jets to a playoff berth and beyond. That likely still leaves Fitzpatrick well short of joining the 'elite' class of NFL quarterbacks.

But hey, you can't knock Marshall for being loyal and trying to play up his guy. In fact, he's still doing it for his old quarterback in Chicago.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if both of these hot takes from Marshall come to fruition in 2016.

Jets fans and Bears fans will certainly be hoping that's the case.

Bryan Altman is, for some reason, an unabashed fan of the Rangers, Jets and Mets. If he absolutely had to pick a basketball team it would be the Knicks, but he'd gladly trade them for just one championship for any of his other three teams.
