Cops Search Sewers After Suspect Runs Into Newark Storm Drain

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching a storm drain and sewer Wednesday, for a missing suspect.

As CBS2 reported, the search was taking place along the McCarter Highway and the Passaic River and eventually moved underground.

Newark officials said the man 'jumped into the Passaic River to avoid capture' after fleeing from Harrison police during a vehicle stop at around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said the man swam across the river, climbed onto a support on the Bridge Street Bridge, jumped back into the river, and swam to a storm drain that he then walked into.

As CBS2's Joe Biermann reported from Chopper2, the underground search had began by 6 p.m.

Police had opened a manhole near Rt. 21 and were searching a sewer for the suspect.
