German Foreign Minister: Donald Trump Is One Of The World's 'Hate Preachers'

BERLIN (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Germany's foreign minister says Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is one of the world's "hate preachers," who he says play with people's fears.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Thursday that right-wing populists in various countries are united by one thing -- "they make politics with fear."

According to news agency dpa, he said that applies to Germany's own nationalist Alternative for Germany party, to promoters of Britain's exit from the European Union and to "the hate preachers, like Donald Trump at the moment in the U.S.A."

Steinmeier's comments came during an appearance in the northern city of Rostock. The minister, who is a member of the center-left junior party in Germany's governing coalition, has previously criticized Trump.

Steinmeier isn't the only European official slamming Trump as French President Francois Hollande said the GOP nominee makes "you want to retch."

"His excesses make you want to retch, even in the United States, especially when -- as was Donald Trump's case -- he speaks ill of a soldier, of the memory of a soldier," Hollande said, according to AFP.

Hollande was referring to Trump criticizing Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart after he was killed in Iraq in 2004.

Hollande continued, "Democracy is also at stake, as we see more and more people tempted by authoritarianism.

"Should the American people choose Trump, there will be consequences, because a US election is a global election."
