Small Blast Rattles Area Near Finish Line Of Olympics Road Race

RIO DE JANEIRO (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A small blast has rattled the area near the finish line of the men's cycling road race in Rio.

Reporters heard a loud boom and felt the ground shake. An officer assigned to the event said it was a controlled explosion of an unattended bag.

A half-dozen military police were cordoning off the area. No one was immediately evacuated, and it did not appear that anyone was injured. The race was continuing and had not been rerouted.

Meanwhile, the organizing committee for the games says it will check into witness reports that a man was shot dead Friday night outside the stadium where the opening ceremony had just concluded.

There is heavy security all over the city amid concerns about safety as the Olympics begin. Training exercises ahead of the games included simulated shootouts in the Rio subway, CBS News reported.

With help from the FBI last month, Brazilian authorities arrested 12 people suspected of plotting ISIS-inspired attacks on the games.
