Fire Rages On Roof Of Historic Building On Bowery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire broke out Monday on the roof of a historic building on the Bowery in NoLIta.

The FDNY was called just before 7:30 p.m. for a fire on the roof of the building at 190 Bowery, at Spring Street.

The fire was brought under control, and there were no injuries, the FDNY told CBS2.

Photos and video shared through Twitter showed the fire raging and plumes of smoke rising from the roof of the building, feet away from a rooftop water tank.

The building where the fire broke out was built in 1898 and 1899 and was once home of the Germania Bank, according to the Neighborhood Preservation Center.

The Beaux Arts-style structure designed by architect Robert Maynicke (1848-1913) features elegant stonework, Tuscan columns and a copper cheneau, the center said.
