But according to one study by WalletHub, New York City is the worst offender when it comes to keeping a pet.

The study rounded up the average veterinary costs, pet insurance rates and pet care budgets in 50 major cities across the United States. The study found that New York City resident paid the most money when it came to veterinary premiums, and spent the most money on pet care overall.

NYC also fell to the bottom of the list when it came to overall pet wellness, a factor determined by the amount of pet-friendly areas -- including restaurants, hotels and pet-friendly homes -- across the city.

However, NYC did rank in the 50th percentile when it came to pet-friendly park space and outdoor areas.

The top five pet-friendliest cities in America include Orlando, Birmingham, Tampa, Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky and Scottsdale, Arizona.

Other worst offenders include Santa Ana, California, Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia.
