Stamford Day Care Center Owner Charged In 2-Month-Old Girl's Death

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The owner of a Stamford day care center has been charged in connection with the death of a 2-month-old girl last month who was left in her care.

Nydia Carrillo-Maldonado, 34, was charged Monday with first-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor in the July 12 death of Bella Redondo.

Redondo was rushed to the hospital from Little Bears Daycare on Wardwell Street after she stopped breathing. Police say Redondo was pronounced dead at the hospital after attempts to resuscitate her failed.

The medical examiner classified Redondo's death as a homicide after finding that she died from blunt force trauma to the head.

"Many parents put the trust of their children in the hands of daycare workers every day and this is every parent's nightmare,"  Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin and Lt. Diedrich Hohn said in a joint statement. "This case was the departments' top priority for the last several weeks. Investigators worked tirelessly to bring the person responsible for the death of a defenseless two month old infant to justice and to assist in restoring the sanctity to the daycare profession."

Carrillo-Maldonado's attorney said his client has a "long and personal relationship'' with the Redondo family and she didn't harm the baby.

Carrillo-Maldonado is being held on $200,000 bond and is set to appear in court on Aug. 22.
