1 Killed, 2 Hurt In Shooting At Jersey City Church

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- One person is dead and two others were hurt in a shooting at a church community center in Jersey City.

The gunfire erupted inside the community hall of the Holy Ghost Tabernacle Ministries on Communipaw Avenue where a party was being hosted Tuesday night.

One witness, who didn't want to be identified, said it was a chaotic scene.

"Some girls are crying people are screaming," he told CBS2's Steve Langford. "I saw three ambulances pull up, I saw one person being carted away on a gurney."

A young man was killed and two teen girls were wounded.

"An individual entered the party last night, he shot the victim twice in the head," Mayor Steven Fulop said. "It was targeted and we have leads on the shooter as well."

One of the girls ran to a nearby fried chicken restaurant for help, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

A man who knows someone who was inside the party said he heard the gunshots.

"We heard gunshots, wasn't really sure if it was gunshots or not, but then we saw police lights and everything, and then my friend called around the corner to check and see if her niece and nephews were fine and everything," said witness Timmy Westgate. "I'm just shocked that it happened in a church."

Neighbors around here say the church hall has had its share of trouble recently.

"They should have checked and patted these kids down because their mother shouldn't have to go through this," one woman said.

City officials said the victim had a loaded gun on him.

The identities of the victims have not been released. So far, no arrests have been made.
