Police: Stranded Hikers Were Part Of Summer Camp For Special Needs Children

ALPINE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Students and counselors from a special needs school were rescued by police after becoming stranded on hiking trails in Palisades Interstate Park.

According to police, around 15 children and six adults were rescued after becoming stranded on the trails in the Alpine, New Jersey section of the park at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

The rescue operation, which required locating several groups of children stranded along a two-mile span of Shore Trail, was completed at around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, police said.

CBS2 was told the group stayed out past dark on a trail near a rock formation known as the Giant Stairs, and they were unable to see their way out.

Some of the hikers were rescued by boat, and others were able to walk back.

The children and counselors are a part of a summer camp program for mentally and physically challenged children in Monticello.

Park police said no one was hurt.
