Suffolk County Introduces 2 New Police Dogs

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County has two new police officers to help sniff out crime.

Officials introduced their newest police dogs to the public on Wednesday.

German shepherds Maverick and Dallas V were hired by the Suffolk County Police Department for their unique skills.

"Their sense of smell is far better than our sense of sight," said Lt. Brian Coltellino. "They can use that nose in the dark, they can use it in any kind of weather."

"They help us find suspects, they help us recover drugs, they help us find explosives," Police Commissioner Tim Sini said.

Sini said the dogs are vital to the force.

"We treat our canines as officers," Sini said. "They're part of our family and we treat them accordingly."

The dogs are expected to complete training in November.
